New Research Reports Released

In January, CAF-FCA will release three new reports on apprenticeship challenges.

What’s Out There for Employers
Employers who don’t regularly hire apprentices say they need more information about the supports available to help them hire and retain apprentices, especially as they consider whether apprenticeship can be an effective part of their business’s long-term HR plan.

As part of CAF-FCA’s Employer Engagement Strategy, we are raising awareness about the incentives and programs available in various jurisdictions across Canada with a report and online catalogue. Both highlight available tax credits, job matching services, wage subsidies and other supports. The information is included in CAF-FCA’s Employer Toolkit, available here.

Apprenticeship Completers Fare Better
Data shows that individuals who complete apprenticeship training enjoy better employment outcomes, enhanced earning potential, increased job security and higher levels of job satisfaction than counterparts who don’t pursue certification.

CAF-FCA will release a report in late January that shows certified completers earn higher annual wages and are more likely to hold a permanent job in a field related to their training.

Creating Diversity in the Skilled Trades
With many skilled workers nearing retirement, it is becoming increasingly urgent for employers to find new talent even as immigration becomes the major source of labour force growth.

This report highlights best practices for connecting visible minorities/racialized workers with skilled trade employers. Examples of services and supports offered by eight organizations offer insight into ways to overcome barriers faced by this under-represented group.

Gathering Stakeholder Intelligence

This winter, CAF-FCA will be collecting new data on apprenticeship in Canada.

National Employer Survey
In January, CAF-FCA is in the field asking skilled trades employers about apprenticeship participation and awareness. The survey will trace changes in employer attitudes since 2006 and identify areas where more work is needed. A parallel survey will track awareness of CAF-FCA employer engagement activities.

National Stakeholder Survey
In March, CAF-FCA will survey a broad range of apprenticeship stakeholders. Among other things, the survey will gauge familiarity with CAF-FCA and components of its National Outreach Strategy, including National Forum Dialogues, the Canadian Apprenticeship Journal and the biennial conference.
