What’s New

May 2010

[The CAF-FCA heads in new direction in 2006]

CAF-FCA’s research and activities are focused on a variety of apprenticeship topics ranging from completion to essential skills to the business case for apprenticeship.

The May 2010 research newsletter focusses on transitions for youth. Educators and apprentices talked to us about the challenges associated with transitions from school to work. They came up with action items and advice to address these challenges.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Advice for those looking for an employer sponsor:

“A willingness to work hard, eagerness to learn and assist, dedication, and a refusal to give up are the winning qualities in the trades. Be confident in your abilities. But don’t over sell yourself.

Arrogance is not a quality that is appreciated in the trades. People are always willing to help and to teach if you aren’t sure what to do. The most important thing is to have a positive attitude.

If you want a rewarding career where you make good money then the trades are for you. You…put in a [few] years of training and afterwards, the world is your oyster.

If you’re willing to do the work, the work is there. I worked hard to get here and it’s the best feeling in the entire world. I love it and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I wish you could stand in my shoes for a day so that you may feel the confidence and pride that I feel every day.”

FUN FACTS

Apprenticeship and happiness

We all know there is a solid business case for apprenticeship, but did you know that apprenticeship can make you happier?

A recent Australian survey found that undertaking vocational qualifications such as an apprenticeship had a positive impact on happiness during the training period, and after completion. “Apprenticeships, which combine learning with on-the job experience, may provide a longer-lasting and positive appreciation of what is done in life, as well as more realistic expectations upon becoming a tradesperson.”
