![]() WorldSkills Calgary 2009: Over 900 Competitors, 3,500 international delegates, 3,000 volunteers, and 150,000 visitors from around the world took part in the 40th WorldSkills Competition, held in Calgary, Alberta from September 1 – 7, 2009. Team Canada’s “Great 38” put on their best performance yet, winning 8 Medals and 13 Medallions of Excellence. Competitors from 51 Member countries/regions put their preparation to the test with intense head-to-head Competition. This bi-annual international Competition sets world-class standards in 45 categories ranging from robotics to web design, welding to cooking, and auto-body repair to landscape gardening. The next WorldSkills Competition will take place in London, England in 2011. The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum kicked off the first day of international Competition at WorldSkills Calgary 2009 with a unique international dialogue called Apprenticeship in a Global Perspective: Engaging Employers and Investing in Apprenticeship Training. International representatives, Canadian apprenticeship stakeholders and the CAF-FCA Board of Directors learned much from the guest speakers who shared perspectives from the U.K., New Zealand, South Africa and Canada. Facilitated by Bruce Sellery, respected business journalist and host of workopolis tv, the session was held at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta.
